The HUE camera was a new addition to my teaching tool kit in remote learning that has continued to be useful.
Like many teachers, I can’t add software to my school laptop without ICT Admin permission, the HUE camera works as an external camera without software. It functions in Teams, Zoom, WebEx, BlueJeans and Google Meet as an alternative camera much the same way you swap your internal mic for your headset – EASY!
This ease of Plug & Play made online learning a breeze, as a Design and Technologies teacher my class content didn’t always translate into a 2D instruction on Teams/Zoom. I was able to add practical lessons like drawing demonstrations to my online classes by switching the camera from me to the HUE after my direct instruction – moving to practical activities. Students were able to follow allow with drawing activities and have a clear view of my page, the resolution was clear enough for detail on sketches and rendering. This opened up possibilities for practical demonstrations and even games while teaching and learning online.
A memorable lesson was using the laser cutter at school and connecting to students online.
They watched up close how the machine worked via Teams and we recorded the whole session for later viewing.
Students loved the HUE camera, they knew that it could adjust and focus and would often tell me it was clear and in a good position or if I needed to adjust, it could be done easily.
Another bonus is the portability, I can use the camera as a mobile camera and record demonstrations. Remote and online learning often felt flat, the HUE camera opened up possibilities for the types and variety of classes that I could teach.
