Gracias HUE!

Esther Ramiro García tells us about her experiences with HUE during the time of COVID-19. Her account below has been translated from the original Spanish.
I am a Secondary teacher of Mathematics in a state school. It has not been easy to re-invent myself, to reconnect with my students now that we are all in isolation and confined to our homes.
I started off using virtual classrooms, Google classroom and video channels that already existed but emotionless learning has no future.
I felt I needed to reach out to my students; to ask them how they were feeling, to help them be ready for each day, to show them that it’s healthy to get into a daily routine, to have a rhythm and not let WhatsApp, Fornite, TikTok or whatever interests them become too much of a distraction.
I tested Zoom, Jitsi, Webex, Hangouts and anything else I could find. Little by little we established a daily timetable, started to get into a routine and were able to get started.
I didn’t give up when I realised that my ultralight and super powerful laptop actually didn’t have a camera. When I originally bought it, I didn’t need one and then when I researched Amazon I saw that they were all sold out and would take a very long time to arrive – just like 3M masks.
So then I got out my old HUE HD Pro camera, which I hadn’t used since I taught technology classes. It came to my rescue because the versatility of this resource has no end.
I already knew it was really special resource from when I used to use it to teach technology with a laptop and projector. I would demonstrate how to assemble Arduino, teaching the kids how to connect all the cables on the screen or showing them a particular part from different angles by keeping it still and manually moving the HUE camera to view it from a different angle.
Now that I’m at home, I am using it to show my students that I am OK, since just as I care about them, it is natural that they also worry about me.
I am currently teaching Equations and Systems. Sometimes I position the camera to view a piece of paper that I’m writing on and sometimes it will be placed over my tablet.
However, it’s my 11 year old daughter, who is 5th grade E.P, who has discovered a brand new world. She no longer needs to ask me for my mobile to take photos of her homework or record her flute practice. All she needs to do is plug the HUE into the USB port of her laptop and use the HUE Intuition software to take photos and then share them on ‘Classroom’ completely independently of me.
I thought that a piece of chalk was enough but these days my HUE camera has become utterly indispensable.
Thanks, HUE!
