HUE has been a member of BESA (British Educational Suppliers Association) since 2013 and values the industry-wide insight they provide. Their recent Learning After Lockdown report signposts key areas where schools are needing to prepare both classroom and online learning environments for the return in to school. Here we highlight those areas identified by BESA where HUE is making a real contribution.

Creating socially distanced learning environments

Using a HUE visualiser to model techniques – for example, to show science experiments or maths calculations – removes the need for students to gather close together to see the demonstration. The live video feed is projected onto the whiteboard or smartboard so that pupils can remain seated in their socially distanced desks and still see everything they need to see.

Blended learning during the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond

From projecting small objects to live modelling, a HUE visualiser is not only useful in the socially distanced classroom but the lesson can also be recorded or live streamed for those pupils not present.

Snapshots can also be taken of whiteboard or workbook content as well as physical objects, which can be later included in homework assignments, uploaded to the school website or learning platforms and also sent directly to shielded pupils.

The camera has a built-in microphone and small footprint, and it is also highly portable, making it easy to move from classroom to classroom and also to teach from home. Students benefit from contributions from the class as a whole whilst teachers benefit by not having to repeat the same lesson with staggered groups.

Support for speech and communications skills/SEND pupils

Pupils gain confidence and expertise when they are able to practice presentations and hear themselves on the recording afterwards. Peer editing helps to perfect technique and provides encouragement and
learning opportunities at every step.

The HUE visualiser is unobtrusive, facilitating user friendly video recordings which can then be live streamed, uploaded and shared. The camera can also be used for videoconferencing calls with other schools where previously they may have met up in person for joint activities.

The HUE Animation stop motion software meets the needs of kinesthetic, auditory, and visual learners, and has found great success with students with special needs.  It’s popular in many maker space areas in schools, and as a tool to teach STEAM subjects. HUE Animation can be purchased as a kit with the HUE HD camera (HUE Animation Studio) or as a software only addition to the HUE HD Pro visualiser.

Supporting teacher wellbeing

HUE cameras can reduce teacher workload and stress and are a great time saver too. No more photocopying! Simple to set up and easy to use, your visualiser soon becomes part of your day-to-day teaching and many teachers simply can’t be without one! There are so many ways to use it such as live modelling, peer editing, showing demonstrations and experiments and sharing students’ work. You can also prerecord parts of your lesson and share them again as a revision exercise later in the year. We’d love to hear your ideas!

The camera can also assist with Continual Professional Development. (CPD). By recording their own lessons, teachers can receive objective assessment and critique from their peers without them having to participate in a live class. This has benefits for both the observer, teacher and student as the presence of a third party can affect the way students respond to the teacher.

Support for reading and writing

Maths, reading and writing are the cornerstones of primary education and visualisers are now playing a key role in helping to teach these core skills. The whole class is able to learn together and enjoy listening to a book read by the teacher, seeing the pictures whilst maintaining social distancing.
