Oh No. We Found a Bug in Our iOS7 Update
iOS… a beautiful abyss of complexity: myCreate 2.0 is born!
I’m going to let you all in on a little secret, and give you a little insight into a younger Jason. The year was 1995, I was a sophomore in high school, I had long hair, and I discovered something.
What did I discover you ask? I discovered art.
Let me clarify. I did not discover art; that happened long before I was ever thrust onto this earth. I simply discovered the art room, the art staff, and the fact that art was a “real” class, and you could go to college to major in “art”. This moment was pivotal in my life, and ultimately in me choosing the path that has led me to where I am today.
Let me back up. I am not writing this post as an ode to the arts, or to encourage students to pursue further arts education. I am writing this post to point out that we all have moments in life that open our eyes and help dictate our future.
So what was it that made me connect with the arts?
1) The Creative Classroom
Lets face it; the art room is not your typical classroom. My high school art room was large, filled with crazy sculptures, paintings, posters, painted wooden tables, plants, music, and everything else that was not in my algebra class. It was when I entered this room that I realized that learning and life didn’t have to take place in rows. All this said the room did not create itself, which brings us to point number 2.
2) Creative Teachers
My art teacher was both incredibly creative, and extremely practical.
I’ll be honest. I didn’t enter art class expecting to have hours of homework, to be pushed beyond my limits, and to endure regular criticism, but that is what I got, and I wouldn’t change a minute of it for a million dollars!
To experience a teacher that was so passionate about her subject, held us to the highest of standards, and created an environment that inspired creativity, was nothing short of amazing.
This is something that helped me far beyond the art room. These were traits that I began to look for in every teacher. I looked for support, encouragement, high expectations, honest and open feedback, and the ability to be pushed
3) Creative use of Technology
I’m going to let you in on another secret. Technology, computers, and anything with buttons have always intrigued me, that being said I was a purest when it came to art. Being all of 15 years old, I thought I had the world figured out, and that there was no place for computers in the creation of fine art.
Much to my chagrin my art teacher introduced us to the world of graphic design, typography, and animation. While I was resistant at first, I learned to love the blending of the technology and the arts.
When I joined the iCreate to Educate team, I loved the concept of SAM and myCreate, and the collaboration of technology, education, and creation. It reminded me of key moments in my education, and what ultimately lead me to where I am today.
So with that, I encourage you to stay creative, set the bar high, and never underestimate the inspiration you can provide.
Now it’s your turn. Do you remember a key moment, teacher, or class that inspired you. Leave a comment and let us know.
